The original LCD games came in a few different styles, Tiger wanted to keep up with the competition so they couldn’t just release boring single screen rectangle handhelds for long! The original ones were similar in design to Nintendo’s Silver series of Game & Watch models, rectangular with a small screen in the middle, but they soon evolved and released models with bigger screens, akin to Nintendo’s Wide Screen range. A few of their titles came in flip up twin screen models too, which were handy for stopping scratched screens.
Along with these Game & Watch type games, Tiger also had its own range of original games. The Overlay games had plastic overlays that were laid on the screen to change the game. Some overlays were pretty useless and just played the same game with a different cover, but others used notches on the overlays to tell the game which LCD sequence to trigger. They also released a series of 3D games, which weren’t actually 3D, they were just normal LCD games like any other, but in front of the screen they had little moving characters that gave the games their 3D moniker, pointless but entertaining nonetheless! They also had a series of games which were flipped from the standard rectangle games, with the screen at the top and buttons at the bottom, not many were released this way though thankfully as I find them quite uncomfortable to play!
